District Court

Legal representation by a Solicitor in the District Court is essential particularly having regard to the offences with which it deals and also the penalties which may be imposed by a District Court Judge.

The following are examples of the type of offences dealt with at District Court level;-

  1. Public Order Offences.
  2. Assaults.
  3. Dangerous Driving/Driving without due care and Attention/ Careless Driving.
  4. Possession of Drugs/Weapons.
  5. Insurance Offences.
  6. Theft and other similar criminal offences.

The repercussions of having a conviction recorded against you can be far reaching not only in relation to your work but also in relation to your ability to travel abroad unimpeded.

Another important reason for being legally represented is that in the event a conviction is imposed immediate consideration can be given to appealing the decision to the Circuit Court. Recognisance of Appeal [ i.e. financial conditions attaching to the appeal ]  must first be set by a District Court Judge before the Appeal papers can be filed.

We have had wide and varied experience of dealing with all aspects of District Court practise in many District Court areas through out Ireland. We can advise on how best a prosecution can be dealt with having regard to many different issues – the summons/charge ; the offence alleged ; statements which may have been made;  the age and financial circumstances of the accused; the District Court area in which the prosecution is to take place and the previous attitude adopted by the District Court Judge for that area. These are all important and crucial issues which determine how the defence of a case is presented.
